Is it possible to export retail receipt after design to another environment?

Hi I'm curious if it's possible for the following:
Use the demo VM to create retail receipts and how they would look with custom fields.  Another instance is where others will be working on doing all the functional and customizations.  When the receipts are done - can they be exported to the actual instance? 

The one thing that buggers me is we'd have to add new custom types (if i understand correctly) that would be added to the receipt designer which means it gets saved to the database somewhere. 

I was just wondering if it is possible to work on receipts in a different environment and then put them all together.
