Where is the best place to add customer/vendor contacts?

In AX 2012, there are two different places to add contacts for a customer/vendor - the Contact information fast tab in the forms, and through the contacts-->Add contact button in the action pane. What is the difference between these two methods of adding contacts? There must be some difference because they do not share data.
