Using the Query Service

Hi - I am planning to use the Query Service in order to run general queries against DAX database per intended use (SOAP calls over HTTP). Pls. see https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg847959.aspx . Example = 'Select * FROM CustTable Where AccountNo = 123'

I'm getting challenges from peers (who are not familiar with the service) on usage of this service tier, citing that it's not good practice to ping against the production database or that this service is not a robust method of querying dynamics data.

Can anyone confirm that usage of this tool is standard practice and it is a mature and robust means of querying DAX data ?
